@eric.akers Some of the bonus money available was based off of previous years' spending too. The Nationals and Pirates were big spenders as well and don't have a lot to spend, either.

Rany made a good point in his latest post about the draft. It's not a secret that the Royals et al were loading up on the guys who dropped by giving them big overslot bonuses and may have been a matter of time before they got priced out of that by bigger revenue teams who may feel they have to spend more to keep up. At least this system is capped, though I do think it limits some flexibility.

There's talent to be had, though, and maybe a couple of high schoolers don't take the money, but my early overreactions have cooled a bit. It's not ideal but it's not a travesty of a new system. There may even be agents who understand the constraints and know that if they want their client to sign, the bonuses won't be the same because they simply can't be the same in a lot of ways and they'll take what they can get. Interesting to see how it plays out.

Here is the mlb list of the top draft prospects:
http://www.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2012/#list=draft

Also from that page, you can click on "20 By Team" and check out the Royals top 20 according to them. It is a great list and makes me feel like we still have a lot coming to potentially make our team great for several years.

With the new slot system for the draft, it will be hard to sign players like Wil Myers now. It seems like the key to the draft is to get the compensation picks so you get a larger amount of slot money.
