"I haven’t been a fan of Pena’s defense ever since he failed to block home plate at least twice last year on critical plays"

And I've been a fan since he crushed incoming base runners several times last year. Playing behind Matt Treanor and under the tutelage of Jason Kendall made Brayan Pena a much better catcher than before and his hitting, especially with the advantage of being a switch-hitter, gives him the edge over Q, IMO. Pena was interviewed after one of the failed blocks and said he made a mistake, he just drifted out of position. He is not afraid of contact and he's tough in the crunch. He's actually better at preparing for impact than Perez, who tends to get hit while in awkward positions. Hitting Pena or Treanor was like hitting a bowling ball.

As for why GMDM traded for Q, he was the best available catcher at that particular moment when Tampa Bay also needed a back-up catcher, so he paid to get the extra few weeks of familiarity with the pitching staff. Quinteros' defense has been disappointing, but his ability to work walks, in spite of his history, and his little bit of offense have been a pleasant surprise.
