@Gage Matthews I know Wang lived on a 94 mph sinker. I would think that Mendoza would be similar living about 9 hits / 9 IP with low K / BB ratio. I don’t think even Wang in his best years would get 19 wins for us like he did for the Yankees, but definitely is a quality pitcher. I don’t know if Mendoza could be at that same level, but he seems to be in a similar mold right now.

@eric.akers I think it’d be awesome to have results like that from Mendoza, Eric. However, Wang was younger by a few years and put up some really good numbers, overall, through the first few years. I’d expect Mendoza to strike out a few more guys than Wang did early on, perhaps, or about on par with the 5.1 K/9 Wang had in 2008. Anyway, I’d love to see those results from Mendoza.

I am wondering how Mendoza compares to a former Yankee named Chien-Ming Wang. He had a lot of success until he got injured. I think Mendoza could be a similar type of guy.

@jim fetterolf I feel the same about Paulino, Jim. I’m just not confident that he can duplicate his success in any way.

Either way I look at it, I’m not sure there’s an easy decision. But that also means there’s likely not a wrong one.

Not too worried about a low 90s sinker with lateral movement who out pitched both Duffy and Monty in the minors last year. Yet another case of a guy in his late 20s staring down the barrel of career ending failure and reinventing himself. Last year it was the Worst Outfield Ever, the year before it was Bruce Chen.

Paulino is more worrisome, his straight, flat, and up 98mph fastball is still hittable. Maybe he can relieve a little.
