@somedevil04 Appreciate the comment. I would guess that a limited no-trade clause could be worked out without too much fuss. But you're right in saying that it's no trifling issue. The Royals absolutely cannot afford to lose Hosmer for nothing but a compensation pick.

great article...i like the offer but i think a lot would be contigent on retaining the right to trade him at the end. royals can't afford to have a no trade clause and let him go without getting anything back. I think this is an offer that they would accept because it is a win-win on Hosmer's end too...he still gets to go into free agency with 8-10 years left in his career so he will get paid twice....someone call Dayton, let him know

Well, I didn't need convincing, but you've made made me more sure. Throw the bank at him now. And I knew most of his homers came outside the K, wouldn't have guessed. 16 of 19 though.

@michael.allen.engel I think if the Royals wait a year to extend Hosmer, he could be a $100 million man. That's why it needs to be done now. Gonzalez was already up for arbitration when he re-signed, whereas Hosmer is still a couple of years away.Gonzalez also relinquished three years of free agency when he signed his extension.

Which is why I think with my proposal, the Royals would be treating Hosmer as a better player than Gonzalez. By offering him almost $6 million in his pre-arb years, and $8 million in what would be his first year of arbitration, they would acknowledge that he's one of the best talents in the game. It can also help deflect what would surely become monstrous arbitration salaries down the road.

I think we can all agree that Hosmer's going to be the top candidate to get an extension and every year that it doesn't happen, Royals fans will continue to hope for it.

He'll probably command better than Carlos Gonzalez's offer, though, either due to salary inflation or just being a first baseman (who projects to be among the best in a big offense position). I like the idea of buying out a free agency year in exchange for an added team option for the following year. Maybe that's the kind of deal they can try to float next season just to spread out the money a bit differently while he's still making the minimum this year. We're lucky that Hosmer came up late enough that he didn't accrue a year of service time in 2011, so while he'll have one more year of arbitration, he'll at least be under team control until after that 2017 year. That should be a good thing - and we'll have locked up what should be his peak years in the process.
