I realize I am in the minority, but I too would love to see Zack back in 2013 when the Royals make a run at not only the division title, but the pennant and series! And I think he just might come back for much less than the $18 million. I also think he understands that there is only so much money a person needs (maybe that’s why he’s dumped agents, who we know most all see only dollar signs). He wants to win, and he liked being a Royal. Therefore, perfect match, or should I say “rematch.” Great article!

Let’s see if I can make some of the same points made below that weren’t taken seriously because they were accompanied by some questionable language. The gentleman was right. Zack Greinke has no problems during the game of baseball. His social anxiety only comes into play when he has to deal with media hoopla or to some degree when dealing with people every day away from the ball park. He doesn’t like talking to people unless he is interested in the subject matter.

It’s also funny for folks to talk as if they know what Zack Greinke is thinking or what his actions are saying about his mindset. Let me put it this way. No one knows Zack unless he wants them to. Period. I don’t know him well, but I know he’s his own man and doesn’t open up to just anybody.

@jim fetterolf Thanks for your post Jim and your positive contribution to our comment sections. I have great respect for your opinion and I agree with you that I would strongly prefer to see Monty, Duffy, Paulino and/or Hoch come through for us this year before breaking the bank on a free agent. Let’s hope we have the luxury of picking a 2013 starting rotation from an entire stable of successful young studs.

I agree that Zack should be considered and that if the Royals win 85 games this year he won’t be that hard to sign and relatively reasonably. I would suggest, though, that we see what we have this year with Monty, Duffy, Paulino, and Hoch before thinking too much about breaking the bank for a five year contract that would prevent us from keeping a couple of our other home grown young studs.

A large part of blogger articles are to try and have fun with the world of baseball and play with possibilities that won’t be written about in a newspaper or magazine. If you just want to deal with cold hard facts please feel free to stick to the KC Star, they have an excellent sports page. Otherwise please take an blog articles with an imaginative grain of salt.

Since you seem to be Zack’s best friend, I would really appreciate you asking him to resign with the Royals for a hometown discount. I’m sure he takes your advice very seriously. Thanks!

@benjammin9287 Why is Arguelles not a legit prospect after one year of American baseball? He has more upside than Teaford or Will Smith in my opinion – though yeah, he could top out at Double A and never be heard from again. He wouldn’t be the first and he wouldn’t be the last.

I would consider Ventura, Brickhouse, and Adam over Arguelles. Did you mean Kyle Smith or Kevin Chapman instead of “Kevin Smith”? I’d probably slot them fairly close together off the top of my head in the same tier as Arguelles.

Oh, and Arguellas is not a legit prospect anymore. He probably isn’t even in our top 40. Yordano Ventura, Brian Brickhouse, Jason Adam, Everett Teaford, Will Smith, Kevin Smith or even Tim Melville would have been more appropriate inclusions with the other pitchers mentioned.

Its pretty clear you don’t know much about current Royals baseball.

You obviously know nothing about Anxiety Disorder. Grienke has no problem at all pitching in front of 35,000 fans. He has always felt very comfortable on the mound and yes he enjoys baseball. What he hates, is being attacked by reporters afterwards in the lockerroom. Having to be available and answer the all the endless stupid fucking questions is what he hates the most.

The actual playing of the game, he has no problem with at all. So many writers and “bloggers” (big difference) have tried to write about Zack by just imagining what it must be like, and making assumptions based on cliche and the mundane circumstances of their own lives.

Stop trying to predict what he is going to do. You have no idea what is good for him and he certainly isn’t going to tell you. He also doesn’t give a shit if your a fan of his or not.

Great look at Greinke! But since you already know you’re going to get opposition, allow me to be the first to problem pose your argument. I’ll start by saying that the Royals should certainly look at Greinke next off season. They should look at a lot of options. And I don’t think that anxiety or depression or the unique way he sees the world should keep him out of KC. Greinke’s never going to be Jeff Francoeur (clubhouse wise), and there’s nothing wrong with that. That said the idea of him ending up back in KC seems too far fetched. 1) The Royals really can’t afford him. That’s the big issue. They can’t spend even $16 million a year on anyone not named Eric Hosmer, and they probably can’t even spend that on him. That’s like 30% of their current payroll. The Royals can’t outbid someone for him, and I don’t think he love KC enough to take a big discount (if he did he probably wouldn’t have demanded a trade in the first place). I think the idea is intriguing, but I can’t see it happening. (I do think it would be a ton of fun to see happen though).
