@oldmanduggan Yes, that seems true. But that was the case before Fielder was signed as well, and people had much more optimism then. The thing that makes the race a little more intriguing to me is noting that the Tigers outperformed their pythagorean record while the Royals underperformed theirs (though I have big issues with that stat in the first place). But I think you're right, the Royals need a lot to go their way to win the Central, but it's happened before (not for the Royals lately but for other AL Central teams). What gets to me is people calling the race before it even starts (or maybe I actually like that ... give the Tigers a false sense of security ... topple them like 2008)

The issue is that the Royals were 24 games back last year. Every projection system that has come out thus far has the Royals sitting in the area of 77 wins while Detroit is generally projected to be around the 90 win mark. Projection systems aren't perfect, but the projections are based on the most likely outcomes. Lots of things could happen, but for the Royals or any other Central team to take the division, a veritable shitload of catastrophically bad things would have to happen to Detroit while nearly everything would have to go right for the Royals (or any other team in the Central, for that matter).
