@mmeade17 I understand the desire to keep the stars, but it will get down to money. I expect a four year deal for Alex to come in around $40 million. Billy, also a franchise face, will get about $10 mil/year when his contract is up. Hosmer, a Super 2, will start knocking down big chunks in a couple of years, as likely will Moose. Perez will be expensive, Duffy, Escobar, Cain if he does as expected. By 2015, those eight are the total $70 million payroll. If trades aren't made earlier for prospects, stars start going FA because we can't afford them and we haven't gotten extra prospects to replace them, then we end up like Florida and collapse, then go on another five year plan. I expect GMDM and David Glass instead to go for sustainability and trade a high priced veteran or two every year as a replacement becomes available. I figure Soria gets traded first, due to bullpen strength, then Frenchy next winter if Myers is ready to come up, then Billy the year after and Gordon the year after that. Just a matter of this being the only way to build a long-term, self-sustaining business model that keeps the Royals an upper-tier team for a decade or more and the only way to avoid boom and bust cycles.

One aspect that shouldn't get overlooked is how much Gordon means to the fan base. After 2011, the fans who turned on him earlier in his career fell right back in love, and their desire to keep him a Royal until he retires will be strong. I believe, outside of Hosmer, who will tarnish his image with Royals fans when he bolts in 2015, Gordon is the most beloved Royal. He's from the area, sort of. He's got the small town ethos Royals fans love. If the front office signs him, which I think we all believe will happen, and then trades him to save money, which I admit small-market teams often need to do, it will burn a lot of Royals fans. It will solidify in their minds that this club is not ready for success on the level that allows them to keep "their guys" in town, especially when we know a guy like Gordon will take less money to stay than he would get on the open market. It might seem like a good money decision to sign him for four and trade him in three, but playing with the morale of a fan base is rarely good. Teams have to keep players like Gordon around to succeed, and by that I mean face-of-the-franchise-type-guys.

And frankly, he's pretty cheap for that kind of a player.

Gordon is interesting, not least because he's rather old, a four year extension taking him to age 32 or so. The other problem with signing him long is that Wil Myers and Yem Prades aren't far away and the shadow of Bubba looms over all. I would sign him for four and trade him for prospects after three. The team's payroll will be tight forever and older $10 million men will need to be traded for prospects, Soria and Billy before Alex. That last year of a four year contract would be about the time Hoz, Moose, and Duffy are in arbitration, Gio, Perez, Cain, maybe Monty, and money will be getting squeezed. As for projecting Gordon's production, if he stays healthy we can assume it will be good, his talent, work ethic, and attitude proven.
