@Gage Matthews@michael.allen.engel I took a look at Latos and two things stood out, an unnaturally low LD%, 16 and change, and a surprisingly high IFFB%, over 10% as I remember, both likely unsustainable. If he could sustain them, that suggests exceptional movement on his pitches, hard to square-up on. His net K/9 indicates that may be true. His shoulder issues are the joker in the deck.

I hated the Ervin Santana idea proposed earlier. This trade for Latos would me much better, but I still don't like it. It sounds like the author believes otherwise, but I think Odorizzi has the ability to be a #1 starter. Giving THAT up paired with a 25 year old all-star (Crow) is too much even for Latos.

I'm a big fan of Latos, but I fear some of skills are regressing...of course, pitchers are wacky as far as regression is concerned, but the 2010 Latos didn't show up last year (neither did the 2010 Padres, for that matter) and there's no telling if he will fall back into that groove.

His career numbers are GREAT, but he's not an Ace; 2 decent talents + 1 potential #3 or #4 starter isn't a good trade for only 1 non-ace.

@jim fetterolf@michael.allen.engel I like Odorizzi, but he may not have quite the peak to be a Latos-type. Still, having that sort of solid middle of the rotation guy is useful in the system. And I think Odorizzi can give the Royals many years of quality pitching. That was the reason that I was only so-so on the trade package Bowden mentioned, too. With Odorizzi likely a year away from being in the rotation, it's hard to trade him now. Then again, if it's for a top-of-the-rotation, young talent like Latos, who can be under team control through 2015, I'll consider it.

Of course, this is a lot of hypothesizing and jawing over no rumors or information, but it would be interesting to see if the Royals could pick this one off.

@Gage Matthews@michael.allen.engel@clintscoles Odorizzi or Myers might be possible, but not both, as Odorizzi can grow into being Latos with more years of low-cost control and production. I prefer the current Process, grow our own until the point we have excess major-league talent to trade for prospects. I expect Odorizzi and Myers both at Omaha next season and both project to fill needs in '13, neither being particularly blocked by Sanchez or Francoeur. If JaKKKKe and Monty are allowed to return to their normal training, both will be up in '12 and Myers will get a September call.

@michael.allen.engel And Bowden pretty obviously only sort of knows what he's talking about, as he labeled Crow a starter. I like using Odorizzi and two others. As @ClintScoles said on Twitter, deal like Odorizzi/Crow + Myers and one other might do it, just hinging on Myers' value. Still, it'd be interesting to see if the Royals could figure this one out with the Padres or if the Padres would be asking something like the A's are asking for Gio (or more).

I have the same reservations against trading BOTH Crow and Odorizzi, but a was mentioned on twitter (and paraphrased from elsewhere) Odorizzi was underrated in 2010 and overrated in 2011. He's good and I think he can be a strong part of any rotation, but he lacks a true out pitch, and hasn't been a ground ball pitcher like Latos.

And just because Jim Bowden pitches that trio, doesn't mean it would be that group (though SD has no reason to trade him unless they get the right deal) so if it was Odorizzi and two others or Crow and two others, then sure...I'm only slightly iffy on including them together.
