@JAYRC_MCB@Jim Been a bad few years for the team as Ewing Kaufman got sick, then died, then the team went into a sort of receivership more concerned with conserving the assets of Mr. Kaufman's estate to transfer to his charitable foundation than with winning. Once David Glass became owner he went through a learning curve, which took a few years of Allard Baird before hiring Dayton Moore and giving him the money and authority to rebuild what had once been the best organization in the game. Moore has, I think, gone about it correctly, building from the ground up and with the view of creating a long-running, successful system like in Atlanta, where he had worked for Mr. Kaufman's former GM.Agree that pitching is important and I expect a rotation of Hochevar, Sanchez, Paulino, Chen, and Duffy/Montgomery/Teaford/Mendoza/Crow etc to be stronger than last year's starting Hochevar/Francis/Davies/Chen/Sean O'Sullivan. We'll have three better starters than last year right out of the gate, quite an upgrade, and one I expect worth an extra ten wins on pitching alone. With position players, Savior Perez has replaced Matt Treanor, Eric Hosmer replaced Kila, Giavotella Getz. Moose replaced Aviles/Betamit, and Lorenzo Cain will be a defensive upgrade in center, although it will be hard for his offense to match the departed Melky for awhile.

As for the farm, most of our top prospects are already up with major league experience. I bet Detroit wouldn't mind having Hosmer, Moose, Gordon, and maybe even Butler and Francoeur. I'm optimistic. Should be an interesting year.

@jim fetterolf Well I guess it's gotta happen sooner or later. Finishing at or above .500 just one time since 1994 must suck. The Royals are definitely one of the more exciting farm systems out there. As I said before, they desperately need to address their starting pitching though. With Minnesota and Chicago reloading, I guess anythings possible.

@jim fetterolfThanks for posting Michael. Most Tigers fans are pretty cognizant of the fact there is a substantial chance the Royals compete. I think 2013 is more likely, but who is to say Paulino, Hochevar, and Chen cant be solid enough to hang in there, along with a better Duffy.

I've posted a couple of comments on that piece. Detroit definitely has some fans, some insightful, others who think Justin Verlander pitches every game and that SPs are the only position that matters. Based on the team we had at the end of the year, plus bringing in Jon Sanchez and having Danny Duffy a year more experienced, I'm down for 85 wins, 90 possible with a couple of breaks. Between us and Cleveland, I think the Tigers are hearing footsteps and they are getting louder.
