I just don't see Crow getting back in the rotation in 2012, at least not in KC. If they want to convert him to the rotation, he will need to work it in AAA. He does not have the changeup to get hitters out with. His slider and fastball are VERY nice, but just not good enough to be a 2 pitch pitcher.

I would not mind seeing a 2012 rotation of Hoch, Duffy, Paulino, Monty, and Mendoza. But it will not get them to 85 wins. It really depends on how the Royals feel about their 2012 chances. If they think they can get to the playoffs, then they will pick up a front of the rotation starter. If they think 2013 is more likely, then they might not do anything.

@royal_in_cincinnati I have been weighing their ability to analyze talent for quite a while and I really think that they're better than they let on. I think they will get one or two pitchers this offseason, even if they're not premier starters. And I think they may end up with Montgomery or Crow (or both) in the rotation from day one in 2012 (I didn't even mention them in that race. Whoops). Whether that works out for them remains to be seen, but it'll be interesting to watch, at least.

Your point about the 40-man is a good one. What comes of the 40-man is anyone's guess. I don't think Maier or Chavez will be on the 40-man after the season, but who replaces them is open to consideration. Sisk definitely needs to be protected and will become a candidate for replacing Crow in the bullpen if he does indeed become a starter.

This is all hand-waving, though. I think the rotation as I see it now would probably end up as Hoch, Duffy, Paulino, Monty/Crow, and Teaford. Of course, that's not including any acquisitions the Royals make over the offseason. I have a feeling things will either change a significant amount in the starting rotation or not much at all. And I lean toward a significant amount.

I agree with you. The only issue with keeping him on the 40 man, is if there are players that need to be protected. I don't have that list, but off the top of my head there are only a couple. Sisk and Hardy are the only 2 RP that "might" need to be. There will be others coming off the 40 man, like Chavez and Getz and maybe Maier. So there is no harm in having depth at the SP spot going into ST. The only concern I would have is if Moore thinks Mendoza is the answer, and doesn't try to make any moves. A rotation of Hoch, Duffy, Paulino, Mendoza, and SOS doesn't sound too appetizing to me.
