@royal_in_cincinnati well said R_i_C - even better, his BB numbers have been disturbingly consistent while his K rate increases. A 3.5-4 K/BB ratio is fan-freaking-tastic over 200+ innings a year.

I think Montgomery is the only one for me that I would not let go. I would think about trading Colon, Robinson, Eibner, or Cain. Frenchy, Melky, and Duffy would be available. I think Melky would potentially have some big interest with the all around year he has had and almost at 200 hits. With the Rays shopping Upton, Melky seems like a nice piece. I think we have more than enough pieces to entice them out of Shields, my question is should we give up a haul for Shields, or are there some other alternatives. The Dodgers have some nice young pitchers and money problems.

@noiro Chen is closer to a 6K/9 and a little over 3BB/9 pitcher. Shields is worth 5.1 WAR and Chen is worth 1.4 WAR this year. Quite a big difference. I'm not saying they need to sell the farm for Shields, but he would be the #1 of this team.

@noiro Career ERA really doesn't tell you the whole picture here. For one, He is an 7.6K/9 and 2.3BB/9 pitcher as well. He has probably been about as good as he is going to get this year, but the numbers seem repeatable. Also, Chen has never pitched in the AL East before. Shields numbers should get a boost if he plays in the AL Central. He has also thrown AT LEAST 200 Innings every year. That is a workhorse type body, that Chen is not. I wouldn't mind them holding on to Chen. It might hold the Royals from bringing up a prospect too soon.

If you are going to trade some of your better prospects, I would sure hope you would get someone that has a better ERA than Shields. Shields has a lifetime ERA of 3.97 and Chen for the Royals has an ERA of 4.15. Is there really much difference in the numbers?? No,

I'ld rather pass on Shields and save the money for Greinke and save the prospects until they are blocked. Monty has no one in his way, nor does Smith or Odorizzi or Dwyer, Myers' timeline brings him to KC to replace Frenchy in a few years.

Our fullest positions are 1B/DH, OF, and RP. Haven't looked at Tampa's depth, but I could see having Soria, and Melky on the table of veterans and Cain, Lough, Robinson, maybe Dyson, and a few of the current relievers, with only Holland and Herrera untouchable in the 'pen. If Soria, Melky or Cain, Crow, and Robinson bring back Shields, go for it. If not, the experience for Monty and others will be worth more in the long run than the extra three or four or five wins that Shields might add next year.

Like you said, anything that involves Myers should bring back a "TRUE ACE". I think Monty is in that same boat.

I still say Myers and Monty are untouchable. Along with any of the position players that made their debuts this year. Would Crow, Holland, Herrera, Coleman, Collins draw any interest? How about Eibner or Fletcher? Yambati or Ventura? W.Smith or Marks?

Would a package of Crow, Eibner, Yambati, and W.Smith get you anywhere close? I keep hearing how the scouts love Eibner, but he had a rough go this year. I know that kind of looks like a pupu platter, but Crow still has SP capability. Eibner has that power/speed combo from the right side. Smith started throwing the slider again this year, and looked pretty good in the 2nd half.
