Also his defensive value has plummeted over the past three seasons - after five double digit UZR/150 seasons, he fell to 8.9 in 2009 and went negative last year. He's just at that age where hard work can't make up for attrition and lack of talent. Betemit does not provide any defense for us anywhere (possibly with the exception of DH). If you believe in pitching and defense as the best way to build a good team, then you see nothing wrong with this signing and bringing him up when Aviles becomes injured.
