Aaron: Great article, I look forward to Appier bobblehead night

Michael: Sick nasty pitcher, he had filthy stuff. Too bad its another tale of the organization unable to capitalize on a force of nature players, though.

Doug: Its been tough. 2003 was pretty special and cemented my love for Zack Greinke and Carlos Beltrán, but then Beltran got flipped and Greinke went and broke all our hearts by going to Milwakee. Its been mostly a sad story, but its always better than having no team at all.

Yeah, it's gotta be tough for Royals fans born after 1980. I was 14 years old when they first won the AL West in 1976, and they were consistently competitive during my 20s. Seems like things started going down hill in the 90s. The last 15 years have been pretty dismal for Royals fans. At least I have those great 70s and 80s teams to remember. Gee I feel old.

Appier was far and away my favorite pitcher to watch in those mid-90s seasons. He had that filthy splitter/slider thing and that funky delivery and just...he was awesome.

When I pitched in rec league in the summers, I modeled my pitching motion after Appier's. A note to any kids out there reading this - DON'T COPY KEVIN APPIER! Pretty sure I destroyed my shoulder a little bit doing that little dip thing. Hard to explain.

Some things I remember: 1) he once had one of those fluke 4 strikeout innings against the Angels I believe 2) The one-hitter that he got the loss in because the Royals couldn't outscore Rafael's solo homer 3) August 2003, the Royals sign him off the scrap heap and he shuts out the Yankees for six innings in an 11-0 win at home in one of the more incredible season series in Royals history. Yes. History.

He ruled.

Good stuff! Embarrassing that the Royals haven't put him in their HOF yet. I wrote about Ape here:
