According to baseball-reference.com

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/balbost01.shtml

Bye Bye Balboni hit .320 with a .433 on base percentage for the '85 World Series. All singles...but 3 RBIs and 5 walks with only 4 k's.

Yeah, I tried to find more specifics on when the moved the fences around and just didn't come up with anything, but now that you mention it, I recall the lowering part too. Good info, and yeah, that does have an impact.

Royals Stadium, before they brought the fences in, also had a 12 foot high wall all the way around (I believe it is 9 feet now). That helped inflate the triples numbers in the 70s and 80s and also makes Bye-Bye's 36 homeruns that much more impressive.

Howser was no idiot. He knew that Balboni hit better with runners on base and knowing the pitcher had to throw strikes. Check out his '85 splits - .229/.292/.471 with no runners on, .262/.325/.485 with runners on.

Haha.

I think it's funny that in the World Series, after hitting 36 homers, Balboni was batting no higher than sixth in the order in any one game.

Never forget at a Royals game once my dad yelled at him, heckling, "hey, pizza boy," and right about that time he hit one onto the freeway. Awesome.
