This was not known to the general public then and the Royals were trying to hide that he was less than 100%(far less). If you watch his at bats during the ALCS you'll see that he swung at most first pitch strikes. If he had gotten exposed by having more at bats, then the Royals would have been at a disadvantage and the Cardinals, if they had the DH might have come out ahead.
