Washburn belongs back in Seattle, where they have a pitcher's park and very sound defense (especially without Yuni now). This is not a win now situation, and the Royals should focus on finding who, if any, among Bannister, Davies, Hochevar and Tejeda can cut it in the rotation going forward.

I wouldn't completely hate this deal if unnecessary money and years weren't already committed to so many at or below replacement level players (Guillen, Farnsworth, Betancourt, Kendall, Podsednik, Bloomquist). But even then it would not make much sense. Washburn's been throwing junk for years. Power arms or elite breaking stuff are what will help the Royals, and Washburn has neither.

BTW What a sad list that is above.

This kind of reminds me of the quote "only losing teams have inning eaters".
In a vacuum and on paper, I'd like Washburn as a part of this team, but, as you noted, his presence doesn't do anything but take starts away from Davies/Hochevar/Bannister - all three of whom still have things to prove and work on both for this year, next year and potentially down the line when the Lamb/Dwyer/Montgomery/Runion/Arguelles/etc crew starts moving up the ladder.

On an unrelated note, being able to type out a decent sized list of potential starting talent off the cuff is light years beyond where Kansas City was as an organization even two years ago. And I even omitted a few, so let's add Crow/Melville/Sample to that list.
