Mike,
Hope you're bouncing back from your bout with the flu! I'm now up to speed on all the movies. The first ones were pretty solid and enjoyable much to my surprise. The fifth one was by far the worst in the series. I don't know if I will ever get around to reading the books since I have a stack of baseball books on my nightstand which have been neglected as it is since I am up so late most nights writing. Then again, I am a little curious to at least read the first once since I spent about 16 hours over the last couple days watching the movies. All of that merits yet another ... Damn you Harry Potter.

This site will be returning to its regularly scheduled baseball content shortly ...

I'm similar in that if something is wildly popular, I'm immediately skeptical of its quality if it appeals to such a wide audience. I worked in a bookstore for more than three years, and I'll admit to being a bit of a snob, book-wise. My eyes nearly rolled out of my head when a gentleman ordered 15 different James Patterson hardcover titles...to use as decoration for a cabinet he was installing in his home. I missed the Da Vinci code craze, but caught the last Harry Potter book's release as well as all the Twilight hullabaloo.

So I get it. I've read the first Harry Potter book because I lost a bet with a die-hard fan and it was innocuous enough.

But I can't not watch the movies. Being laid up with the flu all weekend, I was too busy watching my Jayhawks get schooled to catch the early films, but saw the 4th and 5th (for the second time in both cases) and enjoyed them.

It bothers me.

Damn you Harry Potter.

And you as well Yuniesky Betancourt.

Yes, agree that the books are MUCH better than the movies... Maybe not the first two since they follow the books pretty well, but don't blame the series if you don't like the movies. If you DO like the movies, though, you'd like the books; just sayin

I didn't read the rest of the post/links because I don't like baseball anymore (I was a Pirates fan) :/

I resisted reading the Harry Potter series for a long time, because of the hype. I finally succumbed to reading them and I loved them. The movies leave enormous portions of the books out; you can't really get the story right by just watching the movies. I don't see the need to compare the Harry Potters to the fantasy genre as a whole, because I personally like them much better than any fantasy genre books. Not saying they ARE better, just that I like them better. In any event, Rowlings is a great and creative writer, and certainly deserves credit for dragging kids away from their video games to read.
Anyway, like your blog.

Uppity strays very far from the heart of my intent.

Rowling has gotten millions of people, not just kids, to read and that IS a wonderful accomplishment. The problem is that most people don't go beyond Harry Potter and think the series is the peak of the fantasy genre. That is the part that makes me really sad. Maybe more people get into the genre via Harry Potter than I realize. If J.K. Rowling leads to people picking up Brooks, Tolkein, and others then I'm all for it.

I appreciate that you took the time to comment and share your reaction. For what it is worth, I never was a fan of Faulkner.

I'd love to type more but I've got another Harry Potter movie to watch. This time I'm making popcorn.

Damn you Harry Potter!!

"There are so many truly great fantasy writers out there that are far more deserving of the hype than that which is heaped upon J.K. Rowling. Three of my personal favorites are Terry Brooks, R.A. Salvatore, and Robert Jordan."

Wow, if you're going to go down that road why not get all uppity because people don't spend all their time with Joyce or Faulkner or Shakespeare? I think your high horse is foundering. Rowling has gotten millions of kids to actually read, and all of us who love the written word should thank her for that.
