Hermida is still young enough that one can hold out hope that he could realize his potential, and he's approaching the mythical coming out age of 27...

I've long been eying him in fantasy baseball, waiting with a watchful eye. Obviously, the Royals can afford to take a risk on a player like this because they're so bad that he can't possibly make them worse.

Unlike their acquisitions of past-their-peak (or peakless) players of the Jose Guillen/Yuniesky Betancourt ilk, this could actually yield a return, and he could be had for next to nothing (read: less than MTV veejay Dan Cortes and an additional prospect).

i would not even be willing to trade Lerew for him. i am high on Lerew though... if he becomes an FA, i might offer him a small deal as an upside play, but nothing more. it'd be different if he was good at defense and wouldn't kill you even if his offense sucked...but that's not the case.

Hermida reminds me of Carlos Pena type player. I would be all for acquiring him and non-tendering John Buck.
