Justin Verlander just doesn't belong in the discussion. His ERA of 3.12 is a full half run worse than Halladay who ranks 3rd out of the 3 I highlighted. His 1.186 WHIP also leaves him a distant 4th. Most importantly his ERA+ of 143 also shows he doesn't belong in the discussion as of today.

He does lead the AL in strikeouts with 159, but that is all he has to hang his hat on in the discussion. While his innings pitched are close to the 3 guys I mentioned, he has also already made his 21st start.

Wins are moot and irrelevant to me with respect to Cy Young voting. I hesitated to even include those numbers, but since so many people use wins as one of their measures for the award, I felt somewhat obligated to include W-L records in my write-up.

In short he clearly doesn't belong in the discussion with Greinke, Halladay, and Hernandez. That's not to say he sucks because he doesn't. Verlander is a hell of a pitcher, but as of today he's not a 2009 AL Cy Young Award contender. In fact a stronger case can be made for his teammate, Edwin Jackson, than for Verlander. Jackson has a significantly better ERA, ERA+, and WHIP, but he's still not up to par with the 3 guys I mentioned above.

If the voting were held today I doubt Verlander would even register a first place vote outside of Detroit. Even the Detroit votes are questionable because Jackson will "steal" some votes away from him or they might actually case their votes based on merit.

Are you forgetting Justin Verlander? He has as many wins as Grienke, Hernandez, Beckett, and Halladay. He is right in the thick of things when it comes to innings pitched. He leads the A.L. in strikeouts. He should still be in the running for the A.L. Strike Outs
