Notes: Greinke, Pena, Pena and 7.00 ERAs

Posted by: Wally Fish
  • Yesterday Zack Greinke was named the AL Pitcher of the Month for April.  Based on what he has done, this is about as surprising as me announcing that I like to eat hot dogs.
  • C-Brayan Pena cleared waivers and yesterday was assigned to Triple-A Omaha.  He is great insurance for the Royals in the event either Buck or Olivo have to spend time on the DL.  His presence also allows Dayton Moore the flexibility to explore trading Olivo or Buck later in the season if the circumstances make that a prudent move.  I have no doubt that he can be a solid backup catcher at the major league level.  He could even become a legitimate starting catcher if given the chance in the right circumstances.
  • Tony Pena Jr. underwent surgery on his left hand to repair a fractured hamate bone.  He is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.  He injured his hand Saturday against the Twins and was placed on the 15-day DL on Sunday.  SS-Luis Hernandez was called up from Triple-A to take TPJ’s place on the roster.  My disdain for Tony is well documented, but I would rather see the Royals remove him from their roster by choice instead of removing him due to injury.
  • The matchup tonight features 2 starters with ERAs over 7.00.  Carlos Silva enters the game with a 7.36 ERA while Sidney Ponson counters that with a 7.16 ERA of his own. As I write this, the Royals are up 3-0 but we can expect plenty of offense the rest of the game.
