Greinke the Great

6 Starts
6-0 Record
45 Innings Pitched
0.40 ERA
0.84 WHIP
45 Strikeouts
8 Walks
30 Hits Allowed
3 Complete Games
2 ShutoutsThat is one heck of a start to the 2009 season by one ultra-talented 25 year old pitcher. Greinke’s 3 complete games and 2 shutouts got me curious about past seasons. When was the last time a Royals pitcher had 3 complete games and 2 shutouts in an entire season?

Greinke has already surpassed or equaled the Royals team totals in recent years.
2008: 2 CG and 0 SHO
2007: 2 CG and 0 SHO
2006: 3 CG and 2 SHO (Mark Redman had 2 CG and 1 shutout)
2005: 4 CG and 0 SHO (Greinke had 2 of the 4 complete games)

In 2004 the Royals had 6 CG and 2 SHO. Darrell May had 3 of the CG and 1 shutout despite having a 9-19 record with a 5.61 ERA.

Finally we come to a season where the Royals staff pitched more CG and shutouts in 162 games than Greinke has in his first 6 starts. In 2003 the Royals had 7 complete games and 3 shutouts. Interestingly, current bullpen workhorse Jamey Wright had 2 CG and 1 shutout this season.

In 2002 the Royals rotation pitched 12 CG and 4 SHO. Paul Byrd had 7 CG and 2 SHO that season, and becomes the answer to the above question.

In the last 20 years, only 5 Royals pitchers have had 3 CG and 2 SHO in the same season.
2002: Paul Byrd (7 CG / 2 SHO)
1995: Mark Gubicza (3 CG / 2 SHO)
1994: David Cone (4 CG / 3 SHO)
1991: Kevin Appier (6 CG / 3 SHO)
1991: Bret Saberhagen (7 CG / 2 SHO)
1990: Kevin Appier (3 CG / 3 SHO)
1989: Mark Gubicza (8 CG / 2 SHO)
1989: Bret Saberhagen (12 CG / 4 SHO)

As you can see from the above list, Greinke has already placed himself in the company of some of the Royals’ best pitchers and at 25 years of age Zack still has a lot of story yet to write.
